At 2.30am on the 9th August officers at Nathon police station were notified that a fire had broken out at the Mankong wholesale company warehouse in Talingnam. The warehouse, which is the largest in Koh Samui and covers three rai of land, contained many highly flammable items such as plastic and paper. The police summoned the fire service who arrived on the scene with six fire trucks, but they were unable to immediately contain the fire that was burning out of control. While fire officials attempted to control the flames several gas tanks exploded and the windy weather conditions only hampered attempts to douse the flames. After nearly two hours the fire department finally managed to control the fire that damaged ten vehicles and caused in access of over 7,000,000 bahts worth of damage. The cause of the fire is unknown, and an investigation is now underway to determine how the blaze started.
