Tuesday April 22nd was Earth Day, and this year’s global theme is Green Cities, a campaign which emphasizes how important it is, more than ever, for us to participate and make the communities we live in and operate our businesses cleaner, moving towards a more sustainable future.
This Earth Day, the Amari Palm Reef team hosted environmental conservation activities to raise awareness of the event and involve both staff and guests in fun activities with a “green” heart. First, a “Samui Cultural Corner” was set up at 14.30 at the hotel’s beach-side Sala, where team members demonstrated how to make the Thai dessert – Khanon Jak, which the guests can taste. The hotel collected donations which will be contributed to environmental education and activities at the local school.
In the late afternoon a “Reef Cleanup Kayak Safari” led by hotel GM Martin Kunzmann, left the beach in front of the hotel with both guests and staff racing to the nearby island on kayaks in a quest to collect the most garbage from the reef and island. After half an hour, the racers returned to the beach with 116kg worth of rubbish, consisting of plastic, abandoned fishing nets, scrap metal and rope, which will all be separated and recycled where possible. Winners received meal vouchers at the hotel’s Prego restaurant for their efforts.
