American man found dead at rented room in Phuket

An American man was found dead at a rented room in Patong on Sept 13 after housekeeping staff noticed a foul smell coming from the room while sweeping the floor outside.

Patong Police were notified at 8:20pm that a foreign man had been found dead at a rented room at Baan Fasi on Pisitkoranee Rd. The man was said to be in a sitting position on the floor with his face resting on the foot of the bed.

However, it was said that entrance to the room could not be gained as both the front and back doors had been locked from the inside.

Patong Police led by Maj Patapee Srichai arrived at the three story building and were led to a room on the third floor. Officers forced open the window and went into the room where they discovered the body of 63-year-old Horace Nelson Higdon Jr from the United States.

Maj Patapee said police found no signs of assault on the body or robbery in the room.

“We found nothing unusual and the air-conditioning was still on,” he said.

Baan Fasi owner, Boonlerd Wanyattikul, 55, who reported the discovery to police said that Mr Higdon Jr has been renting the room since July 2014, and that he renewed the lease every six months.

Mr Boonlerd said, “Mr Higdon was staying in the room alone. He was very polite and never had problem with anyone. On Sept 13 at around 8pm, our housekeeper, Mr Samyu, a Myanmar national, reported a smell coming from the room while he was cleaning the third floor area. I went to check but the room was locked.

“After learning that no one had seen Mr Higdon for a couple days and that his rental motorbike was parked in the parking area I had Samyu climb to the balcony at the back of the building to check if he could see anything.

“Samyu reported that he could see a motionless Mr Higdon in a sitting position on the floor with his face at the foot of the bed, so we called police,” said Mr Boonlerd.

Maj Patapee added, “The body was taken to Patong Hospital for doctors to confirm the time and cause of death. The American Embassy has been notified.”
