Finnish advocacy group that accused Thai company Natural Fruit of violating the rights of its workers. The prison sentence was suspended for two years, effectively putting Hall on probation, a move which will impede his efforts to investigate corporate supply chains in Thailand.
During his investigation Hall had interviewed migrants who worked for a Natural Fruit Pineapple factory reporting that around 800 workers were paid less than the minimum wage at the time. The defamation charge was based on an interview Hall gave to Al Jazeera in connection with the report’s findings. The computer crime charge stemmed from claims that he uploaded confidential communications to the website of Finnwatch. Finnwatch have denied the claims.
After the verdict Hall posted to his Facebook page “I am currently detained temporarily in basement of the Court as my lawyers process payment of 150,000 baht fine (not sure whose money used!)”. He went on to say that his legal team will appeal the verdict. It is believed Hall himself is jetting off to Finland on Thursday after having his passport returned by the courts.
