Australian tourist dies after visiting Thailand

In Australian tourist has died from a rare mosquito born disease he picked up in Thailand. It is understood that this is the tenth recorded death caused by rare disease Japanese encephalitis in Australian.

The victim of the disease from Victoria was in his 60’s. His symptoms started eight days into his ten day trip to Phuket. After returning home it has been reported that the man had trouble staying awake and went to hospital a few days later feeling dazed and confused. As his condition worsened he was admitted to the ICU where he later died.

There is no Japanese encephalitis in Australia, so in all cases the disease has been contracted abroad. Health figures suggest that the risk contracting the disease from mosquitoes is very small indeed, it is thought only one in a million travellers will be affected.
