Authorities in Koh Tao promise to enforce safety regulations after tourist hit by boat propeller

Two days after a twenty year old British tourist was severely injured by boat propeller authorities on in Koh Tao have promised to enforce safety regulations.

The incident prompting the move occurred when a girl diving with a local dive company was struck by a boat’s rotor almost severing her leg. Rescue workers brought the victim to a hospital in Koh Samui where she is being treated for her injuries. Police have now been spurred to inspect boat companies and diving practices on the island to ensure they are meeting safety standards and those involved in the sport hold proper licenses. The police have advised those visiting the island to only dive with companies who are properly licensed, that way if the unexpected happens qualified instructors an rescue you and solve problems in a timely matter, a police spokesperson said. He went on to say that the police had visited the victim who was in a safe and stable condition after an operation on the bones in her leg that lasted several hours.

The driver of the boat, who initially fled the scene, has now been arrested. The police are waiting for medical records about the injuries before formally charging him with the crime. Reports suggest that the man has already confessed to hitting the girl and offered to compensate her via his boat accident insurance.
