Bangkok Airways (PG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) will become the first scheduled foreign carrier to serve the Myanmar capital, Naypyitaw, with three times weekly flights. According to Mr. Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, Bangkok Airways’ president, the route will launch on September 30, 2013 with an ATR72-500 operating. With the launch, Bangkok Airways will therefore become the only Thai carrier to serve all three of Myanmar’s main cities which include Mandalay (set to début from September 15) and Yangon. Low-cost rival Thai Air Asia (FD, Bangkok Don Mueang) plans to launch flights linking Bangkok Don Mueang with Nypyitaw later this year though.
