Summary

That’s it we are done the group stages are finished! And, unfortunately, so are Ronaldo and his Portugal teammates as they fail to make the Knock out stages.

What odds would you have been given on Spain, Italy, Portugal and England all failing to get out of their groups?

Germany, Belgium , Algeria and the USA go through, while Russia, South Korea, Ghana and Portugal are all heading home.

The Russian Goalkeeper has laser shone in his face and the perennial biter is banned for 4 months!

Take a breath and then get ready for the Knock out stages as we get to the business end of the World cup in Brazil

The Main News .

Sadly we must again start with the biting news as Day 15 saw FIFA s hand a 4 month ban to Mr Suarez. The Uruguay striker has been suspended from all football-related activity for four months for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini. He will also miss the first nine games of the Premier League season.

Uruguay say they will appeal, calling it an “excessive decision” for which “there was not enough evidence”.

Okay on with Day 15’s Football

2014 world cupThomas Muller again was the difference as Germany qualified as winners of Group G with victory over the United States. The Bayern Munich forward scored his ninth World Cup goal in as many games to give Germany a routine win at a rain-soaked Arena Pernambuco The rate at which Muller is scoring in World Cup games is only matched by Brazil legend Pele. This was a strange game for the USA as it was certainly a frustrating afternoon for the United States and their fans as they failed to force Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into any save of note, However their qualification was assured when Portugal could only beat Ghana 2.1 thus sending the USA through on goals scored . Germany, played their familiar passing game at a patient tempo and carved out a series of early chances .On at least three occasions Boateng found space wide on the right and fizzed low crosses into the box, while Ozil probably came closest to scoring as he tested Howard in goal.

The breakthrough didn’t come until the 55th minute when Per Mertesacker heading powerfully at goal forced Howard to push the ball into the path of the advancing Muller. The forward struck his shot first time and it zipped passed Howard before he could react.

The USA had improved in the second half, but after 10 minutes in, now found themselves a goal behind and despite Bedoya’s effort ,which was blocked and a Clint Dempsey header late on which went over just over late on there wasn’t much real threat of an equalizer.

Although Ronaldo was giving Portugal a late lead against Ghana, they couldn’t find the necessary extra goals needed to advance and so it’s the USA who march into the last 16 for successive World Cups

In the other group Ten-man Belgium beat South Korea to top their World Cup group and set up a last-16 tie against the United States.

South Korea needed a win so the onus was on them to attack and they were helped when Defour was sent off for a reckless studs-up tackle which caught Kim on his shin.

Belgium have been criticised in some areas for a lack of flair in the tournament, but no one can question their resilience as they have let in only one goal in three games .

South Korea’s need to attack left them exposed at the back and Belgium took advantage. Origi, who had looked lively for Belgium after he came on as a substitute saw his long range effort being parried by the Korean keeper, but it was Vertonghen who reacted quickest to slot in the winner.

In the other group game Algeria came from behind to beat and therefore knock out the Russians. Former England boss Fabio Capello saw his Russia side take an early lead when an unmarked Kokorin headed in, but Algeria grabbed an equaliser in the second half as Slimani converted from Brahimi’s free-kick. The Algerian’s equaliser was a controversial one as television pictures showed a laser from the crowd had been pointed into the face of the Russian goalkeeper moments before the goal.

So what to expect from Day 16 …….
