On August 25th Stephen David Grant, a teacher at the Assumption Thonburi College in Bangkok, collapsed and died in a hospital in Bangkok. It was later discovered that the UK national was jailed for sex crimes against children and had been banned from having contact with children by a British court.
Grant was teaching English at a very high level at the Assumption Thonburi College, his past only came to light after his death when a colleague spoke to Grant’s mother who is now arranging for his body to be sent home. His colleague, who knew him as David Grant, rather than Steven, knew nothing of his past prior to the phone conversation.
Prior to his position at Assumption Grant was a teacher at the Satit Udomsueka Academy in Pattaya, where he waws dismissed for inappropriate behavior with students. Prior to that position he worked for a Thai government school in Bangkok, he had also taught in China.
In 2009, aged 31, Grant was jailed for 18 months for tricking boys into sending him indecent images of themselves. After confessing to his crime in a confession box a priest instructed Grant to give himself up. The case was heard at the Leeds Crown Court where he admitted eight charges of inciting children into sexual activity while in a position of trust between December 2007 and July 2008. The court handed down a ten year sexual offences prevention order banning him from working with children. He was also put on the sex offenders register.
