British ex-pats in Samui question why the secrecy over the new honorary consul

Since Dave Covey resigned as Hon. Con last year the British residents of Koh Samui have been eagerly awaiting news of his replacement. However do date none has come.

The Samui Times have received many emails with regards to ‘who the new guy is’ after publishing the news of Dave’s departure last year.

On Samui Times reader, who recently contacted us said

I have been in contact with the British Embassy in Bangkok since January asking for the name of the new appointee and was fobbed off initially by them as they told me that although an appointment had been made they had to wait for official confirmation from the Thai authorities before the appointment could be confirmed.

Later on in the year I was told that the appointment would be confirmed ‘in the near future’.

Another British Ex-pat told us

Apparently, the position has been filled and officially confirmed. When I asked why the name of the new Hon. Con. had not been publicised and embassy representative said she said they believed that was unnecessary as, should his services be necessary he would be contacted from the Embassy and no direct contact with him was possible.

Rightly or wrongly, I pointed out that in my opinion I believed the expat communities on Samui and other islands were entitled to know of the appointment and would be comforted in the knowledge there was someone resident on Samui able to give immediate assistance should it be necessary.

The Samui Times did a simple google search and discovered this article https://www.samuihospital.go.th/weben/news-all.php that seems to suggest that Mr Hargreaves Brierley is the new hon con, as to why the position has not been made public, well that so somewhat more of a mystery!
