Campaign for elimination of sexual harassment in public transportation system

The Safe Cities for Women network has asked the managing director of The Transport Co., Ltd. to join the “Albino Team” to campaign for the elimination of sexual harassment on public transport.

Ms. Rungthip Imrungrueang and other members of the Safe Cities for Women network recently submitted the Albino Handbook : Aware, Understand, Able to Help When Sexual Harassment Occurs, to Mr. Chirasak Yaowatsakun, the managing director of The Transport Co., Ltd. The campaign is designed to achieve the elimination of sexual harassment on public transport.

The campaign is promoting guidelines to help solve the problem: providing training courses for staff to understand the nature of the problem while equipping them with the skills to help sexually harassed passengers; installing CCTVs in vehicles, at terminals, piers and stations and developing a sexual harassment notification system.

In the Albino Handbook, statistics from a survey in which a questionnaire was answered by people of all sexual orientations, 35% of the survey group said they had been sexually harassed while using public transport, 45% of whom were female.

The unwanted attention came in the form of eying, physical contact, whistling and verbal harassment. It occurred most frequently on buses, motorcycle taxis, in taxis, vans and on trains.
