Christmas and New Year holiday deaths increase in numbers from last year

On Tuesday the first day of the New Year Holiday fifty eight people were killed and a further five hundred and seventeen were injured according to the Road Safety Centre. This figure his higher than last year when thirty nine died and three hundred and ninety nine were injured.

The areas with the most accidents with 23 cases each were Surat Thani and Chiang Mai. According to Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, the Deputy Transport Minister the major contributing factor was drunk driving that caused around thirty six percent of the incidents, a further twenty four percent was down to speeding and eighty two percent of the accidents involved motorcycles. Most accidents occurred between 4pm and 8pm.

In Koh Samui all four major hospitals reported increased numbers over the Christmas period and it has been reported that the Bangkok Samui Hospital is now in fact full and has no beds left, most beds have been taken up with victims of road traffic accidents.
