Code resort is a quite remarkable architectural statement, a beautifully considered minimalist complex of sumptuous design where simplicity marries so harmoniously with the natural landscape of verdent tropical flora. Located on the north shore of the island on a gently sloping hillside above the beaches of Bang Por with superb views across the shimmering Gulf of Thailand towards the distant isles of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
The Code team, led by french manager Max Defosse, have definitely come up with a winning combination with the introduction of their Wednesday evening ‘Sunsets and Sax’ theme. There really is something rather special in watching the golden orb of the sun slip into the ocean whilst supping on your favourite cocktail with the gentle melodies of talented saxophonist Koran Daniels floating on the air. Picture perfect.
There is a distinct intimacy that takes hold of you as the friendly, professional staff flit from table to table with an almost wraith like ease, nothing is too much trouble. Talented mixologist Randel is a veritable cocktail master, I would highly recommend the mouth watering Bloody Mary which was the perfect blend of quality Vodka and fresh tomato juice with just a touch of ‘zing’ in the right places, a particularly apt sundowner against a backdrop of a blood red sky.
This weekly event is held at Code’s very convivial Vanilla restaurant either on the spacious roof terrace or in the beautifully appointed restaurant itself should the weather be inclement. The menu on offer features a special 999THB three course Thai set meal for two comprising of succulent chicken satay, the tastiest crab cakes this side of Cornwall and delicately wrapped fresh vegetable spring rolls. For the entree, a rich and creamy green curry, chicken with cashew nuts and fried rice delightfully presented in a perfectly ripe half pineapple. The dessert of mango slivers on ice cream topped sticky rice was heaven right here on earth. As well as contemporary Thai classics the well considered menu also offers many international and mediterranean dishes to suit all tastes. To accompany your choice of food the Vanilla wine list is extensive, the Australian Cabernet Sauvignon blanc was refreshingly crisp and fruity comprising subtle notes of peach nectar with woody undertones that slipped down the throat like the Devil in velvet trousers.
As the sultry evening sky gave way to the all embracing cloak of night Koran’s finely worked sax interpretation of a classic Cyndi Lauper song will keep us coming back to Code, time after time.
