The tiny curved toe gecko is facing extinction thanks to being widely hunted and sold in markets along the borders of Thailand and within markets such as Bangkok’s Chatuchak weekend market. Their appeal is due to their vibrant stripes and colours. However hope is in sight for the curved toe Gecko as the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and plant Conservation will add the Tukkai to the list of protected animals. Currently the law does not cover the hunting of geckos whose habitats on limestone mountains have been seriously impacted by mining. Once the tukkai is put on the list under the Act of Preserved Animals, expected next year, those who trade them will be faced with a fine of 40,000 baht and jail terms of up to four years.
