Bangkok governor Gen Asawin Kwanmuang has told his staff to look again at plans to revitalize Khao San road and turn it into a semi “Walking Street”.
But one of the areas that he insists on is that there will be no foreigners taking Thai jobs by selling in pitches on the street, reported Daily News.
The governor – installed under Article 44 laws by prime minister Prayut Chan-Ocha in 2016 – was speaking after his deputies and the Phra Nakorn district presented plans for the new Khao San.
He wants to see more details about times the road will be opened and closed and when and how a proposed automatic roof will operate.
He also wants to see further discussion on the 88 million baht budget proposed for the scheme.
He is also keen to ensure that, apart from the no foreigner rule, only one pitch is given to each trader and that there is no sub-letting of pitches.
It has been suggested that the road can recover its “tourist landmark” status by turning it into a kind of Walking Street with a one lane road that would satisfy both visitors and traders alike and provide some form of access.
