Electric Eyes: Thais asked to check 300,000 CCTV cameras nationwide

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered that all 300,000 known CCTV cameras nationwide be checked in order to increase overall security in the country.

With official support, both government-operated and privately-held cameras should be checked to ensure functionality and optimal operation. The cameras are used as evidence in crime cases and often the best source of information for police.

If more cameras are needed, agencies can ask the government for funds to buy them, reported Bangkok Post.

Prayuth noted, however, that the government can’t afford to replace all the simple cameras with more high-quality ones.

The new initiative will focus on functionality as well as making sure that the owners of privately-held cameras are aware of laws stating that they must provide their footage if asked by authorities

“Private and state agencies must cooperate. Faulty equipment should not be an excuse,” the PM noted.
