An ex-Marine was crushed to death by a wild elephant in his longan orchard in Chanthaburi’s Pong Nam Ron district on Sunday night (Dec 31).
District officials said that the former Marine officer, 59-year old Prapas Pannarat, heard his dogs barking in the orchard late Sunday night and alerted his son, Mr Akkarawat, to find out if there were any thieves trying to steal their fruits.
Instead of thieves, the two men found themselves in confrontation with a wild elephant which charged into them. Prapas failed to escape and was crushed by the animal while Mr Akkarawat was slightly injured when he tried to help his father.
After the elephant ran away, he rushed his father to Pong Nam Ron district hospital, but he was already dead upon arrival.
Forest officials who arrived at the orchard launched a hunt for the marauding elephant and, at the same time, warned people in the neighbourhood to exercise caution when venturing out of their houses.
