Asalaha Bucha Day celebrates the first Sermon given by the Lord Buddha on the full moon day of the eighth lunar month. The sermon was delivered 2,500 years ago at a Deer Park in Varanasi, India.

The Sermon told that every suffering comes from the cycle of life, disease, old age and death. The desire or inability to obtain something is the foundation of suffering, only when you stop desiring, you will learn to be free from any suffering and there is a middle way that leads you to a path between extremes of asceticism and indulgence leading you to the elimination of desire.

Today is one of the most sacred days in the Buddhist calendar and Buddhists will make merit by visiting temples, offering food to the monks and abstaining from alcohol and immoral acts.

The sale of alcohol is banned until midnight on Tuesday night, as Tuesday is the Buddhist Lent Day. The immigration office in Nathon is closed today and tomorrow and will open again on Wednesday. Banks are closed today but will be open again tomorrow.
