Indonesia restricts Thai airlines

The transport minister revealed yesterday that Indonesia has restricted Thai flights to Indonesia but this does not affect current operation by Thai Airways International.

Thai flight restriction on IndonesiaThe restriction came in a notice Indonesia sent on July 16 to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) prohibiting all Thai airlines flying to Indonesia to add more transits, flights, or change routes, though chartered flights are still allowed as usual, but they would be considered under stricter inspections.

Transport Minister Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong affirmed the Indonesia’s restriction but assured that the recent move by Indonesia would not disrupt any operations by Thai airlines, as there is only one airline that flies a direct route between Bangkok and Bali, seven flights per week, as well as 10 flights weekly between Jakarta and Bangkok.

He said despite the announcement by Indonesia, the current number of flights could still cater to passenger demands.

The minister further noted that the national flag carrier, Thai Airways or THAI also has no plans of expanding its routes to and from Indonesia or increase any flights on the routes it already operated.
