Island resident Anzhela reflects on her motorbike accident in Koh Samui

Five broken ribs, five broken teeth, a fractured shoulder blade, and a punctured lung.

This intense course on life can turn one into a bit of a philosopher, to me they were just lessons learned and an UNUSUAL CHRISTMAS GIFT from the Universe.

I’ve meant to write about my experience for some time now, but hadn’t till now. I believe only now I’m in the right state of mind to do so. My pain is almost gone, my emotions are less intense and I can reflect on the recent event in my life with a much clearer mind.

How it all happened…

Anzhela accident 3It was a nice sunny day. December 24th, Christmas Eve. I had so many exciting things happening in my life. The love of my life was coming to see me soon, I had just launched a new company, the holidays were approaching and I was so excited to spend this magical time with friends, and I was starting to pack for a trip I had planned for just before the New Year.

The plans I had made so eagerly for myself didn’t happen to coordinate with my life’s plans for myself.

As I was coming back from the meeting in Nathon (Koh Samui, Thailand) I had a motorbike accident. I don’t recall the specifics of how it happened, I was told there was some road work going on and I crashed somewhere amongst the rubble; the details are unclear.

It’s a peculiar feeling when you wake up with bruises and broken bones throughout your body but can’t remember how they developed. But it had happened, there was no doubt about it. All the pain couldn’t lie.So there I was, with all of my plans and expectations thrown out the window in a matter of hours.  The reality was that I was in a hospital bed unable to move, speak, or think clearly.

Life has an off sense of humor, I’ve got to admit. Just as you begin to  think you have it all figured out…bam…and your whole life is thrown upside down and you are forced to reevaluate your believes, hopes and expectations – everything you thought your life was about.

Don’t become all sad here though , sometimes before getting all clear about your life and what you are all about you have to “take out the trash”.

Anzhela accidentLessons learned…

Where do I begin, there are so many things that went through my mind since the accident that took place about 3 weeks ago. I’ll share the most useful and important of them here.

1. Never take anything for granted.

Appreciate every single thing that is given to you because it is truly is a gift.

Every living and breathing moment you feel is dependent on your healthy body that holds you day after day.  The amazing people in your life who do in fact love you, and support you in all you do; they work to make you happy every day. All the amazing things that happen every day, all the little miracles of life that go by unnoticed  Only because you have gotten too used to having them around.

Life is such an amazing gift! Every breath you take is another opportunity to enjoy this beautiful day full of magic moments.

Its unfortunate how, we often times only appreciate the miraculous nature of simple respiration only when every single breath causes pain. Only then we realize how blessed we are to have an opportunity to take that breath and to enjoy the miracle of life.

2. Don’t waste your time

Don’t waste any second, minute, or hour from a day in your life because you are not promised the next. You might think you have time but do you really?

anzhela 2One minute you can be enjoying a bike ride, planning for the next year in your life, and in the very next minute you could be dead on that very road.

Don’t ever postpone you heart’s desires, and don’t ever put off things you’d really like to do to the future. Nobody can promise you that you’re going to have that time or what you perceive to be the future.

If there is something that you want to do or accomplish in this particular moment, and you know that there is nothing you would rather do, seize the day and just go for it. Leave your excuses, doubts, fears, and insecurities behind; they are irrelevant to help you achieve your aspirations. The top regret people claim to have had when asked from their death bed, is the regret of not living their lives to the fullest and not taking leaps of faith and doing all the “crazy” things they wanted to do.

Get crazy and go after your dreams even if they would make everyone around you think you are out of your mind. That’s what life is about – being yourself and living by your own means and personalizing it as you go. There is no recipe book for life so don’t look for one.

Don’t waste your time being less than what you want, and stop doing something that you don’t enjoy. Don’t waste your time pretending to be someone that you are not by lying to both yourself and the world around you. Don’t waste your time on people that don’t accept you for who you are, and don’t waste your time on people you don’t genuinely enjoy the company of.  Don’t waste your time and your life by living to someone else’s accord.

You have just one life to live, and it is passing you in increments this very moment. So chase your dreams whatever they may be just go for them.  The truth of the matter is that you have no tomorrow, all you have is now and yourself.

3. Nothing is perfect (including yourself), so just accept it and enjoy the life as it is.

I do now believe that everything is in fact perfect, me included. Life is perfect, the world is perfect, and it’s people are perfect.

The only thing that is not perfect is our conception about the world, life, people and events.

Life force, the universe, God,  it doesn’t matter what you call it, but whatever it may be,  it has a perfect plan on how everything is supposed to work out and how the pieces are meant to fall in place.

It might not be clear at first and we might encounter some difficulty in understand it right now, but it’s working as we speak.  On the rare occasion its force is so strong that even we are able to connect the dots in the plan after it has all played out well in the end.

Circumstances, people you meet, the way people treat you, and what we call accidents all happen for a reason.  They change you, make you treat life as a gift, learn the lessons you need to learn,  experience a variety of things. It’s all going to be ok at the end, it’s going to be perfect and if you listen to your heart more, life will become much more  amazing than you can even fathom with the unbounded limits of your imagination.

Life is amazing and so simple. Just live YOUR life to the fullest. Stop thinking. Do it NOW!

It’s that simple.
