Phuket officials are investigating reports that jet ski operators have returned to Surin Beach despite the ban. Phuriphat Theerakulpisut, the Phuket Marine Office Chief, will be leading the investigation that was sparked by reports and photos of jet skis being brought onto the beach. Some were also reportedly driven dangerously close to nearby swimmers.
Mr. Phuriphat said that his officers will check to see if the individuals who brought the jet skis to the beach were operators, or tourists. If they are operators, Mr. Phuriphat stated that he will check to see which club they belong to, and if they are not members, legal action will be taken.
As far as tourists go. Mr. Phuriphat stated that no serious measures have been taken to stop the behavior as tourists are likely unaware of the ban. Currently, police have no measures in place to prevent tourists from driving jet skis from nearby beaches to Surin Beach.
Mr. Phuriphat said that he doesn’t know what to do about the situation. Jet ski operators have been told to inform tourists of the ban, but many do not abide by the rules. Mr. Phuriphat said it would be unfair to fine the operators for something a customer did.
This is not the first time jet skis have caused issues at Surin Beach. In January, an inspector witnessed a jet ski being driven dangerously close to swimmers at high speed.
