The Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) continued to make the progress by hosting “Samui Low Carbon Week”. Koh Samui could be the model town which has potential to develop as the low carbon or less the emission of Carbon dioxide city in the future. Koh Samui was also targeted to reduce Carbon dioxide in amount of 399,797.90 (ton per year).
Today (20th September) Mr. Thammayos Srichuay, deputy director-general of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Department presided over the opening ceremony of “Samui Low Carbon Week” which also known as development campaign for Koh Samui to be the low carbon town during 19th – 21st September 2014 at Samui Palm Beach Hotel, Surat Thani Province.
Samui Low Carbon activity was initiated from the working group of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) selected Koh Samui to be the model city that has the potential to develop as the low carbon city since 2012. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) also identified that tourism industry was the industry that emit carbon dioxide in high level in 4.95% of carbon dioxide emission in the world. Koh Samui is one of the important tourism cities in Thailand which is consuming much electricity and growing fast with many constructions of buildings, accommodations, hotels etc. Number of tourists visits approximately 1,000,000 per year. Therefore, Koh Samui is considered to be outstanding world-class tourism city. The Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) and alliances from every stakeholders attempted to promote Koh Samui in energy saving and develop alternative energy resource on the island to reduce emission of greenhouse gas which complied under Koh Samui development procedure to be low carbon city which has following 9 procedures;
Samui Low Carbon Week activity during this 19th – 21st September consisted of international academic conference and brainstorming with government sector and entrepreneurs of hotels and resorts about point-purchase collection project for environmental friendly products and services, also called Eco Point Program (EPP) which had APEC representatives and case study of EPP system application from Japan and South Korea to exchange knowledge to tourism operators in Koh Samui. The conference would give knowledge to entrepreneurs of hotels, resorts and other accommodations on Koh Samui about alternative energy and energy technology especially heated water production from solar energy by using drain water from air-conditioner and refrigerator to be reused and included Bio gas technology which could lead to reduction of entrepreneurs’ cost of operation. There was also conference about Solar PV Rooftop or production of solar energy from rooftop installation utility and about Energy saving for entrepreneurs by LED bulb promotion procedure which contributed information by many expertise instructors such as from DEDE, energy production operators, and academics. There also had exhibition and booths to suggest about products and services from energy production operators such as Solar cell installing and Bio gas including with suggestion of supporting alternative energy project and energy conservation from DEDE and energy conservation for entrepreneurs of hotels, resorts, and other accommodations on Koh Samui, Other than, Samui Low Carbon week also will grant Green Leaf Award Ceremony to Green Hotel by Green Leaf Foundation, said by Mr. Thammayos.
