Roberto Martinez has today confirmed that he will be leaving relegated FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic. The 39 year old’s decision was made after consultation with Chairman Dave Whelon and ends a relationship that started in June of 2009 and peaked when Wigan beat Manchester City in the 2013 FA Cup final.
Whelon added: “He wanted permission to move so I’ve given that, he has 12 months left on his contract, so whoever comes in for him must pay the remainder of his contract. He feels he’s not the man to lead us back into the Premier League. I’ve got to accept what he feels. He loves Wigan and the fans. We have to move on now and want applications for the job.”
On Tuesday Everton seemed like the most likely club for Martinez according to the bookies, with Malaga also seen as a likely option.
