Myanmar To Issue Temporary Passports To Workers In Thailand

Myanmar will issue temporary passports to its migrant workers to enable them to work and travel in Thailand legally, Xinhua news agency reported citing an official media report.

Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister U Aye Myint said work to legalise undocumented Myanmar workers in Thailand are currently being carried out at eleven temporary passport issuing camps, the New Light of Myanmar said.

Arrangements have also been made to open five more similar camps, the minister said.

As part of its bid to ease domestic unemployment, Myanmar’s Ministry of Labour has sought overseas job opportunities for its workers since 1990.

Myanmar workers work mostly in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Libya, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, Switzerland, Brunei Darussalam, France, Germany and Qatar, among others
