Pattaya police under investigation for extortion in drugs case

ONB News reported that the chief of police in Pattaya was investigating after an alleged case of extortion by officers and volunteers in Pattaya.

A man referred to as “Ek” had contacted his sister after he and two friends were stopped by police and taken to a “safe house”.

This happened in the Nong Prue police jurisdiction.

Once at the safe house the men claiming to be cops spoke to “Yai”, the sister, to demand 300,000 baht for the release of her relative.

This was bargained down to 160,000 that the police accepted.

The sister went to Nong Prue police who said they had no record of the bust.

But the men involved turned up at Pattaya police station as the three suspects were released.

It was not clear in the story if the money had already been paid or if the police had got cold feet after reporters got involved.

The chief promised an investigation.

The Pattaya chief is Pol Col Apichai Krobpetch.
