Police detect betting activities on first day of World Cup

The Royal Thai Police reported on betting activities in Bangkok and other provinces on the first day of the FIFA World Cup tournament which kicked off in Brazil last night.

Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Ake Angsananont said that a number of arrests have been made yesterday against those who were involved in football gambling, both online and offline.

Police have earlier established an operations center to crackdown on gambling activities ahead of the tournament. The center is set to focus on preventing children and students from participating in football betting by assigning officers to patrol entertainment venues and restaurants that broadcast World Cup matches.

The Royal Thai Police is working in collaboration with the Information and Communication Technology Ministry to track and curb betting activities online.

An anti-gambling 1599 hotline has been set up to allow members of the public to report on gambling nationwide. All relevant agencies have also been urged to relay information on such activities.
