VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis has expressed gratitude to Thailand for supporting the affairs of Christians and urged the country to guarantee human rights and assist the poor, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.
Thai Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told the Pope during their meeting at the Vatican City this week that Christians in Thailand have always helped the poor and that her government is determined to support Christianity.
The Pope also thanked the Thai government for supporting the education of Christians in Thailand.
Yingluck has extended an invitation for the Pope to visit Thailand during his trip to the Philippines in the near future.
As for her recent talks with Italian counterpart Enrico Letta, Yingluck said the Italian prime minister hopes to see the conclusion of a free trade agreement between the European Union and Thailand by the end of 2014.
