Pailin Chuchottaworn the chief executive of PTT has spoken out in defense of the way the PTT have handled the oil spill that has hit Koh Samet at a meeting with thirteen environmentalists, activist and media representatives. The environmentalists visited the company to return their PTT Green World Prizes in protests against the efforts of the PTT to manage the spill.
Environmentalists have claimed that the PTT and its affiliate did not provide enough information to the public about the spill, 18 meters off the coast of Ranong. Lanna Bird, president of the Nature Conservation Club said that PTT’s management plan on the problem was not effective. “It seemed the company was trying to downplay the impact of the spill” he said.
However, Mr Pailin said it was premature to cast blame and added that in any case PTTGC would bear full responsibility for the oil spill.
“But we have not yet been able to clarify the cause of the oil leak,” he said. “We are now investigating the cause and assessing the impact” and insisted that only 50,000 litres of crude oil leaked into the sea.
