The director of the foreign affairs department of the public prosecutor’s office in Thailand has denied press reports that the Thais are going after former PM and fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra in Hong Kong.
Chatchachom Akkhapin said there was no truth in stories linking his department with efforts to extradite Thaksin from Hong Kong.
An Instagram post suggested that Thaksin would be in Hong Kong on Friday to attend the wedding of his youngest child, daughter Paetongtarn “Ung-Ing” Shinawatra.
Chatchachom said no contact had been made with the Hong Kong authorities. But he conceded that though Thailand and Hong Kong have no formal extradition treaty it would still be possible to request the return of a wanted fugitive if the evidence presented was sufficient.
In the first instance they would need to ascertain the address of Thaksin in Hong Kong and the public prosecutor’s office are not aware of his whereabouts in Hong Kong.
However, he seemed to leave the door open to obtaining this information.
The denial follows a post on “thaksinlive” on Instagram earlier in the week that indicated Thaksin would be in Hong Kong for “Ung-Ing”‘s wedding on the 22nd of March, this Friday.
