A Russian man has been reported missing after he went scuba diving off the coast in Chonburi province.
Mr. Karen Gapoyan, 50, was travelling with 46 other Russian divers on route to a diving spot west of Rin Islands, the manager of the diving company, Mr Suwimol Malaiyart, 41, told the police. He said Mr. Gapoyan was among the first group of 7 Russians allowed into the water, accompanied by a diving instructor. The group reportedly spent 55 minutes scuba diving in the area, but at the end of the dive Mr Gapoyan did not surface along with his fellow divers.
The Navy has been conducting search and rescue operations in the area, with a helicopter and a number of rescue parties on boat, to no avail.
Mr. Gapoyan’s wife Ms. Galina Telichkina said that the couple were on their honeymoon in Thailand after getting married on the 16th of November. She believes her husband is still alive, despite his absence, due to his extensive diving experience.
The man has over 159 logged dives and was diving with his own diving equipment. The manager of the shop said that he had signed to say he was aware that he was diving at his own risk prior to the dive. From Mr. Gapoyan’s background it appears he does not have any congenital disease and he was in a good state of health when he embarked on the dive.
The police will continue to coordinate with the Royal Thai Navy and the sea rescuers to search for the missing diver.
