Southern residents brace against dangers from strong waves

Turbulent weather in the Andaman Sea has prompted people along the coast to hastily repair sea barriers that were damaged by waves while small boats have been forbidden from heading out to sea.

At Bang Niang and Nang Thong Beaches in Takua Pa district, Phang Nga province, operators of restaurants, hotels, resorts and bungalows gathered woods, rocks and sandbags which were to be used for the repair of sea barriers. A few days earlier, powerful waves slammed into the barriers and caused heavy damages.

Meanwhile, at Rawai Beach in Mueang district of Phuket, the stormy condition has forced over a hundred long-tail boats and speedboats to suspend services for tourists. Only some are still operating to nearby islands of Koh Hey and Koh Lone.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of turbulence in the Andaman Sea, with waves of 2-4 meters high. The Marine Office in Phuket has also prohibited small boats from leaving the shore during this period, particularly those with a length of less than 10 meters or an engine of less than 400 horsepower.
