The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation says summer storms that hit several parts of the country since March 13-20 have wreaked havoc to 340 villages in 22 provinces.

The department’s director-general Mr Chayapol Thitisak said summer storms have damaged 2,559 houses in 340 villages in 60 districts of 22 provinces.

He said the storms damaged houses in Phayao and Chiang Mai in the North, and 16 provinces in the northeast including Kalasin, Udon Thani, Nong Bualampoo, Buriram, Roi-et, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdaharn, Maha Sarakham, Surin, Sakhon Nakhon, Khon Kaen, Yasothorn, Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

The storms also damaged houses in two central provinces, namely Suphanburi and Chainat, and Chonburi in the East and Yala in the south.

He said relief officials of the department were coordinating with local government agencies to provide primary assistance to the affected people, and were sending officials to assess damages to houses so that appropriate compensation would be given to them.

He added that on emergency cases, the people could call 1784 around the clock for immediate assistance.
