Thailand to raise water transport safety standards in Andaman Sea

The Marine Department signed an agreement with relevant agencies to raise water transport safety standards.

Andaman safetyDeputy Transport Minister Ormsin Chivapruck chaired a seminar on water transport safety, which was held in Phuket province over the weekend. Among the attendees were Marine Department Director-General Sorasak Saensombat, Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada, representatives from six tour agencies based in provinces along the Andaman Sea, and official from related agencies.

An agreement was signed to establish a water transport safety center and to align safety regulations to international standards, in a bid to foster tourist confidence.

According to Marine Department chief Sorasak, provinces along the Andaman Sea are considered to be among the world’s most-visited tourist destinations, making tourist safety a priority. These provinces include Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Ranong, Trang and Satun.
To this end, four safety measures will be adopted in these provinces. They include measures to enhance accident response and prevention, extend aid to accident victims, and support safety-related research and development.
