In the early hours of Monday the 15th of September at 6-30am the police in Koh Phangan and Koh Tao received a report that a dead couple had been spotted on Siree Beach. Immigration, police and a rescue team quickly went to the scene were the found the bodies of a 24 year old man , and 23 year old woman, believed to have been a couple traveling from the UK. (names removed from the article until family have been informed)
Police are uncertain why the attack took place, but are aware that there was a beach party on the evening of the 14th of September where many foreign tourists were parting until the early hours of the morning about 100 meters from where the murders took place.
The coupe who were found naked both had extensive head injuries, the woman also sustained horrific facial injuries consistent with blows from a garden pick or spade. Police suspect the attack may have taken place as the couple left the party by a foreign worker possibly from Myanmar and may have been sexually motivated.
A police team have been dispatched to investigate the crime scene as a matter of urgency and there are grave concerns that the attack will affect the islands tourism.
Police have closed down all piers on the island in an attempt to stop the suspect escaping to another island or the mainland.
The Foreign office have been informed of the incident and are in the process of contacting the families of the victims.
