10 years on: Thaivisa remembers the Boxing Day tsunami in Thailand

For the ten year anniversary of the Boxing Day tsunami, Thaivisa looks back at the events of that fateful day.
The tsunami that followed the huge earthquake in the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004 remains one of the worst natural disasters in history.
More than 230,000 thousand people lost their lives across 14 countries, including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The devastation caused resulted in a worldwide humanitarian response the likes of which had never been seen before.
Among the thousands of victims, many were foreign tourists and expats who were spending the Christmas holidays at Thailand’s beautiful Andaman coast, in the south west of the country.
As many people relaxed and enjoyed the beaches in Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi on the morning of Boxing Day 2004, none of them could ever have imagined the event that was about to unfold.
As part of our coverage, we’ll revisit some of the original news stories and forum posts which followed the tsunami.
We’ll also share a selection of harrowing interviews with survivors from the disaster brought to you by some of the world’s leading broadcasters.
We also ask you to share your memories of that day.
