69 illegal Burmese workers arrested in Phuket

On August 17 Pol. Bri. Gen Sunchai Chokkhayaikij, Superintendent of Phuket Immigration said that on Aug 16, the police arrived at Rassada, Muang Phuket to investigate Burmese migrant workers who had been smuggled into Thailand without work permits. The officers split into three groups and lay in wait for the immigrants.
As the immigrants arrived a raid took place, some of the workers fled into the jungle, others scarpered to the second floor of a nearby building. The police lay chase and throughout the day apprehended seventy five of the workers who were taken to the Phuket immigration office. In the control room the workers were asked to present their papers and documentation to representative of the labor office, only six of them were found to be working legally in Thailand. The remaining sixty nine workers found to be working illegally, mainly in the fishing industry, were charged with working illegally in the country.
