Bangkok police report three cases cleared up – taxi drivers, frauds and foreign romance scammers arrested

Police gathered at an open air press conference at the national Stadium yesterday to report on the resolution of several high profile cases in recent days.
First up was the arrest of two taxi drivers in connection with the robbing of a Lebanese tourist who was taken to Suvanabhumi airport by two men in a cab from Don Meuang. These were Sunthorn Rortsap, 45, and Watcharit Janyu, 42. The latter has denied the charges.
Tourist police and 191 cops announced the arrest of seven romance scammers preying on gullible Thai women through social media. One was Nigerian and the rest were Thai.
The gang posed as eligible and good looking foreign men and when they had gained the trust of the victims endeavoured to fleece them of money.
In a third case involving tourist police, 191 and the Huay Khwang station a 41 year old man called Patrawit Khateu was arrested on a charge of pretending to be Thai. Police say he obtained Thai ID then opened up a travel company under false pretences.
The authorities also said that 36 places were raided looking for illegal residents and over-stayers in Bangkok. These raids under the “Insri Tamil” or Black Eagle banner resulted in the arrest of eight Ugandans and one Nigerian for not having permission to be in Thailand.
A further five people were arrested on overstay. One was from Uganda, one from Senegal, one from South Africa and two from Nigeria.
