There are not many venues in Koh Samui that have quite as much on offer as The Bangkok Restaurant and Corner Sports Pub that can be found under one roof on the corner of the Ghost Road opposite Bandon Hospital. For a start this is a great venue to tuck into some wholesome, hearty and very great value western and Tex mex dishes that are presented in a way that would not look out of place in a five star restaurant. It’s a great place to enjoy a serious journey into really authentic Thai cuisine that has not been watered down to western tastes and it’s refreshing to find that there are dozens of dishes that you would not be able to find on other Thai menus. This is great news if you want to immerse yourself in everything Thai and even better if you have a Thai partner who wants to eat real Thai food and not a falang version of it with the accompanying prices. Of course as the name suggests this is a great venue to watch your favorite sports games on big screens inside the comfortable, indoor, air-conditioned Corner Sports Pub that offers, Guinness, Singha and Tiger beer on draft as well as a long list of other affordable alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. It’s a great place to enjoy some live music from talented artists who perform every night in the outdoor Bangkok Restaurant area where you can sup on a cold pint of draft Singha or Leo. And of course the large seating area alfresco (covered) dining area outside with its stage and full line up of musical instruments makes it the ideal venue to entertain guests or clients at private functions, dinners and parties. This is a superb place to enjoy as part of a large group, the layout, space and experienced staff are all conducive to catering for big numbers, it is a great place to go as a couple as indoors the seating is perfect for dining alone and there are many quiet corners in the outdoor area if you don’t feel like socializing and if you are going solo this is a great place to catch up with locals and ex-pats who have it firmly planted on their ‘best places to hang out’ list.
But that is not all, there are a few other great reasons to put this unique venue on your own ‘best places to hang out list’, one of those reasons has to be Ladies night on a Thursday when the girls can drink free cocktails in the Bangkok restaurant from 8pm until 12pm, and that leaves no room for excuses for your better half not to join you for a night out in the pub or for a group of girls to have a night in. On Fridays you can enjoy half price 12 inch pizzas with live music that starts at 9-30pm as well as pints of Leo and Singha for only 79 baht. On Wednesday nights this is the place to be for hoteliers when the islands hotel staff can enjoy 20% discount on all food and beverages. Sunday nights will appeal to anybody who loves getting involved in the music, its Open Mic Night where you can strut your funky stuff with your own or the venues instruments, and there is a free glass of beer or wine in it for all performers.
When it comes to food you will be hard pushed to find better value, bigger deals or fresher ingredients, the head chef, who is well known within culinary circles, loves nothing more than scouring the islands markets for the freshest of ingredients and one thing you can be assured of here is consistent quality.
So what’s on the menu? Well for starters a dish of 6 or 12 finger licking good Chicken wings either buffalo hot or BBQ served with a large dollop of incredibly tasty blue cheese sauce with carrots and celery. Ideal for side dish or a snack at the bar is the basket of homemade chunky chips or Chili cheese fries. The Corner Signature sliders are hearty little mini cheeseburgers with that oh so delicious secret sauce. The Chili bites are another house special not to be missed, but be warned, these bite sized grilled wraps are highly addictive. If you are a fan of Tex Mex then another great way to indulge your passion is with the Chicken Quesadillas or the Nacho platter of crispy corn tortillas layered with chili con carne, olives, jalapenos, guacamole and sour cream. The tomato and smoked capsicum soup makes a delicious reminder of home and the Tom Yum Kung reminds you that you are in Thailand. Salad lovers can choose from iceberg Caesar (with or without chicken) or a hearty Chef salad of baked ham, beef, chicken, vegetables and cheese.
Your burger and sandwiches choice includes Old Fashioned, Classic Bacon and Cheese, a delicious chili dog topped with chili con carne, crispy onions and cheddar cheese, a huge Meatball sub, a wantonly tasty Philly Cheese steak sub and for those who do not eat meat, a well balanced Grilled vegetable sandwich with Portabella mushrooms, zucchini, red peppers, cashew pesto and cheese.
The house favorites include a healthy portion of spaghetti meatballs smothered in homemade bolognaise sauce, Beer battered fish and chips, incredibly juicy and tender BBQ babyback ribs, the Ultimate Fry up of butchers sausage, bacon, black pudding, grilled tomato, potatoes, mushrooms, eggs, toast and beans served with coffee, tea or orange juice and Soft tacos served with your choice of chicken, beef or vegetables with sour cream or salsa.
Pizza lovers can choose from Four Cheese, The Corners Meat Lovers, BBQ Chicken or the Fireball that has chili cone carne, pepperoni, jalapenos, peppers and onions, no matter which you choose you will be more than impressed with the taste, falovors and amount of toppings that get packed into 12 inches of deliciousness. Calzone fans can pick from Pepperoni, Meatballs or Chili Con Carne. And if you think you can handle more then check out the homemade fudge brownie with vanilla and chocolate ice cream topped with fresh whipped cream, peanut cup crumbles and a cherry!
There is really nothing not to like about this double venue under one roof, the live music will have your toes a tapping, but at the same time it can’t be heard from the refreshing air-conditioned atmosphere of The Corner if you want to inject a bit of quieter conversation into your evening and of course if you are indoors and see the crowd outside having a good time you can just step outside and join in. If you want to keep in touch with the rest of the world then of course there is free wifi and pleasing this venue is immaculately clean both inside and out!
The corner is open from 11am until late and the Bangkok Restaurant starts serving at 2pm and stops at 2am.
Live Music is available each and every night from a wide selection of bands starting at 9.30pm until the wee hours of the morning!
