The Samui Times sent out an independent judge to taste the five burgers that got the highest number of votes in the Samui Times Facebook Best Burger on the Island voting poll. Our judge acted as a mystery customers and purchased one burger in each of the outlets. The burgers were judged in five categories, taste for which they were awarded up to twenty points and ingredients, presentation and value for money that attracted ten points each. Here are our judges findings and his final decision.

Number five on the voting table was Petcharat Marina. When the burger was first presented it looked fantastic with a steak knife used to keep the top of the fluffy bun in place. Everything looked nice and fresh and the patty had a distinct home-made look to it, which i really liked. The ingredients in general were nice and fresh and of good quality. In terms of the taste the burger was decent but not mind blowing. Overall it was tasty but at the end of the day it just felt like it was missing that special something.patchurat burger

Number four was the famous The Shack. The Shack is famous around Samui for their fantastic BBQ fare and the burger is no exception to this. First thing you notice is that the pure beef patty is about as thick as they come. The burger is also topped with some fried onion and peppers along with bacon and cheese. The patty was perfectly cooked and still lovely and moist. In my personal opinion the burger could do without the peppers but that is just personal preference. In terms of taste the burger really delivers well but again, in a similar case as Petcharat, it just seems that something special is missing.

Number three on the list was the much touted Bondi Aussie bar and grill. When the burger arrives at the table the first thing that struck me was the fantastic aromas emanating from it, because of the amazing basting sauce they use while BBQ’ing the patty. The bun and overall ingredients are fresh and high quality and the patty is a thing of beauty. In terms of taste there really is nothing I would change to make this a better burger. The sauces, meat and veggies all combine to create something truly delicious.

Number two on the list was the very impressive The Larder. The Larder being the only fine dining restaurant to be on the list is quite impressive and obviously created some pretty lofty expectations, expectations I can state with confidence were met at every turn. Presentation was always going to be the Larder’s strong point and boy does it deliver. The burger is visually striking when it arrives at the table, topped with golden fried onion rings and a variety of sauces. The patty is huge and incredibly thick, but despite the admirable girth, it was still cooked to perfection. In terms of ingredients not much can be faulted except for home made mayo which is not very flavorful. The burger tastes fantastic and the quality of the meat is quite obvious. Overall it’s an impressive beast and one that would take some beating.

Number one on the list and our reader’s choice winner was Prund ens Pause. The little orange minivan was considered a bit of an underdog, considering the competition it was facing and also the fact that, well, it’s a minivan. But what it lacks in stature and size it certainly makes up for in burger quality. The ingredients in general seem a little bit cheaper than some other competitors, but taking into account that the burger is less than half the price of any of the others, it all balances out in the end. But even with the ingredients being slightly cheaper, they still manage to put out a truly delicious and juicy burger. From the sauce combinations to the tasty patty everything works, but I would gladly have paid an extra 20 baht if it meant better lettuce. But overall it is one of the better burgers I have tasted in a long time.

But unfortunately there could only be one winner at the end of the day. And in my eyes only one offered the full package in terms of value for money, fresh tasty ingredients and a truly delicious taste. As mentioned some of the places were just missing that “something special”. Only one place truly showed that “something” and that was Bondi. The basting sauce they use while grilling the patty just simply adds the most fantastic flavour and when combined with the other sauces and tasty ingredients this was the only burger that truly made me say “yum” with every bite. At the end of the day the top 3 was separated by a mere 3 points.

First place – Bondi 44/50

Second Place tied – Prund ens Pause and The Larder 43/50

Fourth Place – The Shack 38/50

Fifth Place – Patchurat Marina 37/50

The Samui Times would like to congratulate all of the top five finalists, for providing superb burgers and to all of the people that took time to vote for their favorite burgers on the island. We are currently searching for the best Roast Dinner on the island, the awards for that will take place at the end of July. Our next poll will be launched today to find out who has the best Fish and Chips on the island.
