The government’s Covid-19 task force meets later today to discuss the fate of the Test & Go entry scheme, along with the potential easing of some restrictions. Supoj Malaniyom from the CCSA says Test & Go could make a comeback soon, but will involve stricter monitoring of foreign arrivals’ health. The Bangkok Post reports that the scheme could now require overseas arrivals to undergo a second PCR test, on day 5 or 6 of their stay.

Prior to its suspension amid concerns about the Omicron variant, Test & Go allowed foreign arrivals to enter the kingdom with minimal quarantine. Passengers had to be tested on arrival, then spend 1 night quarantined in their hotel room until the test came back negative. After that, they were free to leave the hotel and go where they wished.

In related news, the Public Health Ministry is recommending that overseas visitors purchase comprehensive health insurance that provides full coverage for Covid-19 treatment. Dr Kiattiphum Wongrajit says partial coverage means the government needs to cough up for the rest and, having already spent 100 million baht of state coffers, it’s no longer prepared to do so.

“We will no longer subsidise. The visitors must buy insurance that covers all treatments or purchase additional health insurance when they arrive here. The measure will take effect when Test & Go is reintroduced.”

Meanwhile, with case numbers now stabilising in Thailand, officials acknowledge the Omicron variant appears manageable and the virus is under control. Supoj says the CCSA will consider easing some restrictions, with PM Prayut Chan-o-cha saying this must be done in order to reboot the economy.
