Death sentence upheld for man who raped and murdered girl on train

In Thailand’s Appeal Court the death sentence imposed on the railway worker who raped and murdered a girl on a train has been upheld. The crime took place in July last year on a train travelling from Nakon Si Thammarat to Bangkok. The court decision was read out in the Hua Hin Provincial Court on Monday morning. Wanchai Saengkhao, 23 was convicted of the rape and murder a 13 year old girl before throwing her out of the window of the moving carriage, the girl’s body was found three days later. Saengkhao told the court that he had been drinking and taking drugs during his shift when he was supposed to be arranging bedsheets in the sleeping carriages. The crime prompted the railway authorities to introduce a scheme to provide women only carriages on all of their main routes. The State Railway of Thailand has paid nearly 10 million baht in compensation for the family of the victim. Wanchai pleaded guilty during his original trial, the court has upheld the death penalty because the evidence against him was so overwhelming.
