A drug trafficking gang lured a police narcotic team into a rubber plantation and opened fire, killing two police officers and wounding another seriously.

Died at hospital was Pol Lt-Col Jirapat Sengseng, and on the spot was Pol Sgt Tanasak Tornpit. Both were attached to Mining police station in Satun province.

Investigation later revealed that Pol Lt-Col Jirapat and his drug suppression team set up a mobile road checkpoint on Soi Wat Tham Rakangtong to check passing vehicles to stop drug trafficking attempt using the road to other southern destinations.

A motorcyclist was seen approaching the checkpoint but immediately make a U-turn to escape, prompting the police to make chase,

The motorcyclist rode into a roadside rubber plantation where a group of drug traffickers laid in wait.

Unaware of being lured into the killing field, the police were then ambushed with assault rifles.

Two officers were shot show another managed to call for help.

Police reinforcement arrived shortly afterwards and rushed the two to hospital. But Sgt Tanasak died on the way to Shaun hospital, while Pol Lt Col Jirapat was admitted to Hat Yai hospital for shot wounds on his body. But he died later for series wounds.

Police said the narcotic gang led by the son of a local politician was responsible as he might take revenge on the narcotic suppression team for making frequent arrest and seizure of his drugs.

Police said a man hunting dragnet to get him is being launched.
