Drunk man dies in Ayutthaya police cell

A drunk man died of heart failure inside a police station’s detention room in Ayutthaya’s Wang Noi district after he was placed there to calm down after threatening people.
Police captured Chatchai Triwut, 26, from a petrol station at 4pm on Thursday and put him in a cell at the Want Noi police station after he undressed himself and loudly threatened to attack passers-by.
According to police, about an hour later the man had turned quiet and so they went to check his cell and found him barely breathing. Police called an ambulance but arriving rescuers found Chatchai had died.
His body was sent to Thammasat Hospital for a postmortem.
His mother, Jintana Triwut, 60, went to the police station at 7.30pm to file documents reclaiming her son’s body.
She said she lived alone with her son after he was discharged from military service three years ago.
