English man caught up in a ten million baht scam found dead in his guest house

An English man has been found dead in his guesthouse room in Chiang Mai province. According to reports the 38 year old had been dead for approximately two days before he was found by cleaning staff who serviced his room at around 10am.
The man, who is yet to be named, is said to be an Oxford graduate who came to Thailand many years ago and who fell in love with a Thai woman. It is believed the woman persuaded him to invest ten million baht into an elephant breeding business, a plan that turned out to be a scam.
Initial reports suggest that the man died from alcohol poisoning, confirmation of the exact cause of death with be determined by a more detailed autopsy. Locals in the area have told reporters that after the woman made off with the man’s money he was seen drinking up to five bottles of alcohol every day, rumors also suggest the man had recently been befriended by an American tourist who offered him support, however she had recently returned home leaving him feeling even more depressed.
The police have said that along with his body many empty bottles of alcohol were found in his room.
