Despite warnings about realeasing fire lanterns near airports a Bangkok AIrwys flight from Chiang Mai had to be cancelled due to pieces of paper lantern being suck to an engine turbine fan.

The director of Chiang Mai airport, Wisut Chanthana said that the foreign objects were discovered during a pre flight inspection on Thursday night. The passengers were transferred to other flights when the plane was grounded for safety reasons. He went on to say that on New Year’s Day alone more than two hundred lanterns landed in the aviation zone, more than during November’s Loy Krathon festival.
