Fishermen report large catches off Krabi after local gulf reopens to commercial fishing

Fishermen in Krabi were able to catch about 10 tons of fishes thanks to the officials’ program to partially seal off the provincial sea, which has allowed the local maritime environmental resources to recover.
Chief of the Andaman Sea Fishery Management Center in Krabi, Charoenchai Srisuwan, visited a fish market in Muang District and inquired fishing crew in the area about the recent fishery situation. The fishermen unanimously told him that they spotted a large volume of fishes in the southern waters off the Samed Island.
They spent 3 hours trawling and was able to catch about 10 tons of fishes worth about one million baht. The fishermen credited their successful catches to local authorities’ campaign that seals off waters every year for the increased amount of maritime resources.
Meanwhile, Mr. Charoenchai reaffirmed that Krabi’s waters do not allow illegal fishing vessels. All of the trawlers possess legal documents. He attributed the large catches made by the fishermen to direct results of the annual campaign to seal off the gulfs of Krabi and Phang Nga for 3 months from April to June.
He said strict rules against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing have also contributed to the increased population of maritime resources in the waters.
