Five killed in a collision with an elephant

Five people have been killed and four others were injured in an accident that involved a car, a truck and a female elephant and her two calves in Rayong yesterday morning.
The accident happened at around 5.20am on highway 344 from Ban Bung to Klaeng.
A police spokesman from Tambon Wangchan said a speeding Pajero van rammed into a female elephant and her two calves when they emerged from the roadside jungle to cross the road. The van then plunged into a roadside ditch, three of the passengers were killed and two others were injured. The seriously injured elephant sustained broken legs in the incident.
As passers- by and police parked their cars in the area to help the victims, a second vehicle, driving at speed, slammed into the back of a car parked in the area killing one of its passengers. The elephant was taken away for treatment. The hospital in Rayong reported that five people died in the crash.
