Gang who beat handicapped man to death remanded in custody until May 14th

The six youths arrested in the killing of a handicapped man in Bangkok on Sunday were denied bail and locked up yesterday.
Somkiat Srichan, 36, had been set upon on Sunday morning by a group of youths after he reportedly answered back to their teasing remarks about his leg handicap in front of the “Pang Horm” bread shop in Chok Chai 4, in the Lat Prao area of Bangkok, reports Manager Online
He died after being attacked with swords carried by the assailants who were passing on their motorcycles after a drinking session. Police called to the scene had to fire their weapons into the air after the gang refused to stop the assault, it was reported yesterday.
Police were successful in their application to the court to have bail denied and the six youths aged from 18 – 22 were remanded for twelve days. Police told the court of the horrific nature of the crime, the severe penalty if found guilty and the possibility that the men might flee, in their application to deny bail.
It was earlier reported that four of the youths are relatives of police.
Reports also emerged that relatives and lawyers for the accused are preparing bail money. The accused were remanded until the 14th as statements from many witnesses are prepared and the backgrounds of the youths are investigated.
