German man dies after alleged leap from Phuket condo

Lt Col Jessada Sangsuree from Kathu Police was called at 7:20pm to investigate an incident where it was reported that a foreign man had jumped from the Patong Condotel, a nine-storey building on Rath-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd.
Police arrived at the scene with Kusoldharm rescue workers and were led to the body of a 76-year-old German man (name withheld until his family has been notified) who was lying lifeless in a pool of blood on the ground.
Lt Col Jessada said, “The man had been dead for at least one hour before his body was discovered. We were let into his room on the seventh floor where we found an identification card. His body was taken to Patong Hospital for doctors to confirm the cause of death.
“There were no signs of assault or robbery on the body or in his room. Because of where the body was found we do not think he jumped from the balcony of his room. We believe he jumped or fell from the fire escape on the seventh floor of the building,” he said.
“We were told by staff of the condotel that the man may have suffered from cancer. He mentioned the illness to a taxi driver who recently took him to Mission Hospital.
“We are not sure if the man had terminal cancer and committed suicide to end his suffering, but we are investigating into this theory before concluding our investigation.
“We will notify the embassy so they can inform the victim’s family,” said Lt Col Jessada.
