Ghost tower in Bangkok to be inspected after man found hung inside

Sathon district officials are due to inspect a 43 storey building in Bangkok after a Swedish man was found hung dead in the high rise. The man’s identity is currently being verified by the Swedish Embassy. The driving license found next to the man suggests that he is one Styk Yohanne Kristian, who was visiting Thailand solo, however as the corpse, due to decomposition, DNA verification will be required. It has been reported that as well as clothes he had several pieces of rope in his guest house.
The Sathorn Unique tower has become increasingly popular with locals and visitors alike who wish to take photographs of Bangkok from an elevated position. Although the building is private property, the police can give cautions about letting people inside the building, and local police have summoned the owners many times about letting insiders in. Security guards hired by the family have been reportedly charging one hundred baht to enter the building and two hundred for foreigners.
Acting Sathon district chief Chaowarit Songnawarat advised the owners to make it official if they wanted to make the building a tourist attraction. Chaowarit said he would ask the guards to be extra careful about people entering the building.
The ghost tower was one of the many major construction projects that were started in the 1990’s when the country’s economy was booming, however the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis caused many such projects to come crashing to a halt.
Locals believe that this building is haunted, one blog reports that the rooms are filled with curious objects such as mannequins.
The buildings commercial brochure says “Sathorn Unique Tower is our first residential project in downtown Bangkok. The tower is 49 stories with the total of 659 residential units and 54 retails, located only less than 200 meters from BTS: Taksin station. Sathorn Unique Tower is also located at the edge of old commercial town of Charernkrung meets the new international business zone of Silom-Sathorn roads. It sits on the horse-shoe blend which is considered the best place for overlook at the Bangkok’s grand cityscape and the charm of the Chaopraya River.”
